很多成年人都有過這種經驗:

看英文文章時:

這個單字我認識。

聽別人說時:

這個字我也聽得懂。

但真正輪到自己說英文時:

腦袋突然一片空白。

明明知道這個單字學過。

甚至剛剛才看過。

但偏偏就是:

想不起來。

於是 Conversation 變成:

“Yesterday I went to… um…”

“I wanted to say… uh…”

“What’s the word…”

Recognising a Word

和:

Producing a Word

是兩種不同能力。

看到:

“recommend”

你可能馬上知道:

推薦。

但如果別人問:

“Which restaurant should I try?”

你必須自己主動想出:

“I recommend…”

這就需要更高程度的:

Vocabulary Retrieval。

也就是:

從腦中主動把單字叫出來。

Passive Vocabulary 和 Active Vocabulary 有什麼不同?

這是理解「為什麼說英文時會忘詞」的關鍵。

Passive Vocabulary

你看到或聽到時:

認識。

例如:

  • recommend

  • convenient

  • appointment

  • improve

  • experience

但你不一定會主動使用。

Active Vocabulary

你不只認識,

而且在 Conversation 裡可以很快說出來。

例如:

“I recommend this place.”

“It’s very convenient.”

“I need to make an appointment.”

“I want to improve my English.”

“It was a good experience.”

真正的 Speaking 能力很依賴:

Active Vocabulary。

為什麼成年人 Passive Vocabulary 很多?

因為很多人的英文學習長期以:

  • Reading

  • Vocabulary Lists

  • Grammar Exercises

  • Exams

  • Multiple Choice Questions

為主。

這些主要訓練:

Recognition。

但 Speaking 更需要訓練:

Retrieval。

所以可能出現一種情況:

你認識5,000個單字,但真正能自然說出來的只有其中一部分。

1. 你背的是「單字」,不是「怎麼使用」

很多人背單字的方法是:

English Word → 中文意思

例如:

“recommend = 推薦”

背完就結束。

但真正 Speaking 時,大腦還需要做:

推薦↓recommend↓放進 Sentence↓選 Grammar↓說出來

這個流程太慢。

更好的方法:背 Chunks

與其只背:

recommend

不如一起記:

“I recommend…”

“I’d recommend…”

“What do you recommend?”

“Would you recommend it?”

這樣你需要表達「推薦」時,不是臨時拼句子。

而是直接叫出:

Ready-made Language Chunk。

2. 你學過這個單字,但使用次數太少

語言記憶很依賴:

Repetition + Retrieval。

如果一個單字你只是:

看過3次,

卻從來沒有真的說過,

它很容易一直停留在 Passive Memory。

真正變成 Active Vocabulary,通常需要你:

  • 說出來

  • 寫出來

  • 在不同 Context 裡使用

  • 多次重新叫出來

一個單字需要用幾次才會變成 Active?

沒有固定數字。

但原則很簡單:

看過一次,不等於會用。

你需要在不同 Situation 裡 Repeatedly Retrieve。

例如學:

“convenient”

不要只說一次:

“It’s convenient.”

還可以練:

“This location is very convenient.”

“It’s convenient for me.”

“Public transport in Singapore is very convenient.”

“The timing is convenient.”

“Would this time be convenient for you?”

一個單字進入不同 Sentence,才更容易被真正激活。

3. 說英文時壓力太大,大腦檢索速度下降

有時你平常明明知道一個 Word。

但面對:

  • Native Speaker

  • Boss

  • Client

  • Teacher

  • Group Discussion

突然就忘了。

因為 Speaking 時,你同時要處理:

  • Listening

  • Grammar

  • Pronunciation

  • Vocabulary

  • Eye Contact

  • Response

  • Social Pressure

大腦負擔一下變高。

於是就更容易出現:

Word Retrieval Failure。

為什麼越緊張越容易忘詞?

因為你會開始過度 Self-monitoring:

「我說對了嗎?」

「這個發音對嗎?」

「這個時態有沒有錯?」

這些額外思考會佔用 Working Memory。

結果 Vocabulary 反而更難快速叫出來。

怎麼改善?

先降低 Speaking 標準。

不要要求:

「每句話都要 Perfect。」

先追求:

Keep the Conversation Moving。

4. 你一直想找「最精準的那個單字」

很多 Learner 卡住,不是完全不知道怎麼說。

而是一直在找:

最精準、最高級、最漂亮的那個單字。

例如想說:

「這個安排很方便。」

明明可以說:

“It’s very easy for me.”

但你一直在找:

“convenient”

結果整個 Conversation 停住。

Fluent Speakers 會 Paraphrase

真正的流利不是:

永遠記得每一個單字。

而是:

一個字忘了,也能換個方式繼續說。

例如忘記:

“appointment”

可以說:

“I need to book a time to see the doctor.”

忘記:

“umbrella”

可以說:

“The thing you use when it rains.”

這叫:

Paraphrasing。

它是非常重要的 Speaking Skill。

5. 你習慣把中文完整翻成英文

如果你的 Speaking Process 是:

中文完整句子↓找對應英文單字↓逐字翻譯↓重新排列語序

你很容易卡住。

因為只要一個 Word 找不到:

整句話就停住。

怎麼減少這個問題?

練習:

Idea → Simple English

而不是:

Chinese Sentence → Exact English Translation。

例如中文想:

「我覺得這個計畫目前來說還算實際。」

不用追求完全一樣。

可以直接說:

“I think this plan is quite practical.”

甚至:

“I think this plan can work.”

Simple English 也可以完成 Communication。

6. 你的單字學習缺乏 Context

單字如果脫離 Context,很難真正拿來用。

例如你背:

“issue = 問題”

但 Speaking 時不知道怎麼用。

如果放進 Context:

“There’s an issue with my booking.”

“The main issue is the cost.”

“We need to solve this issue.”

就更容易記住。

為什麼 Context 很重要?

因為大腦不是只記一個 Word。

還會一起記:

  • Situation

  • Sentence

  • Collocation

  • Emotion

  • Meaning

這些 Cue 越多,Speaking 時越容易 Recall。

7. 你沒有建立 Collocations

很多英文單字不是隨便組合的。

例如:

make a decision

take a break

book an appointment

raise a question

give feedback

如果你只背:

decision

break

appointment

question

feedback

Speaking 時還要臨時決定:

前面要搭配什麼 Verb?

這就增加了 Mental Load。

所以更好的學習單位通常是:

Collocation,而不是 Single Word。

8. 你過度依賴中文意思

如果你看到:

“improve”

腦中永遠只有:

改善、提升

那 Speaking 時還是需要:

中文 → English

更好的方法是建立 English Association。

例如:

improve:

“improve my English”

“improve my speaking”

“improve communication”

“improve quickly”

慢慢讓:

English → English Connection

變強。

9. 你沒有練「快速叫出單字」

很多 Vocabulary Exercise 是:

看到 Word,然後選 Meaning。

但 Speaking 需要的是:

沒有提示的情況下,自己把 Word 找出來。

這兩種訓練不一樣。

所以想提升 Speaking Vocabulary,需要做:

Active Recall。

什麼是 Active Recall?

例如不要先看答案。

問自己:

“How do I say ‘預約’?”

然後自己回答:

“appointment.”

再進一步:

“How do I use it?”

“I’d like to make an appointment.”

這種練習比:

看著單字表重複念

更接近真實 Speaking。

10. 你對 Speaking Speed 的要求太高

有些 Learner 覺得:

流利 = 說得非常快。

所以越說越急。

結果大腦來不及 Retrieve Vocabulary。

真正的 Fluency 不等於 Fast Speaking。

更重要的是:

  • Fewer Long Pauses

  • Natural Rhythm

  • Clear Ideas

  • Smooth Connections

所以適度慢一點,反而可能說得更好。

忘詞的時候應該怎麼辦?

不要直接 Stop。

可以使用以下策略。

方法1:換一個簡單的字

想不起:

“purchase”

直接說:

“buy”

完全沒問題。

方法2:解釋這個東西

想不起:

“receipt”

可以說:

“The paper they give you after you pay.”

方法3:用相反的詞

想不起:

“expensive”

可以說:

“not cheap.”

方法4:描述用途

想不起:

“charger”

可以說:

“the thing I use to charge my phone.”

方法5:直接說暫時忘了這個字

可以說:

“I forgot the word, but…”

“It’s something that…”

“I can’t remember the exact word.”

然後繼續。

真正的 Conversation 不要求你每一個 Word 都記得。

怎麼把 Passive Vocabulary 變成 Active Vocabulary?

一個很實用的方法是:

1 Word → 5 Sentences。

例如今天學:

“available”

不要只記:

available = 有空 / 可用

而是說:

“Are you available tomorrow?”

“I’m available after 3 pm.”

“This class is available on weekends.”

“Is this seat available?”

“The teacher is not available today.”

這樣一個 Word 就會從 Memory 開始進入 Usage。

用 Topic 學單字,比隨機背單字表更有效

例如不要今天隨機背:

hospital

discount

interview

airport

project

這些彼此沒有關聯的字。

可以依照 Topic 一起學。

例如:

Restaurant English

一起學:

  • menu

  • order

  • recommend

  • bill

  • spicy

  • reservation

  • table

  • available

再用這些字做 Conversation。

Vocabulary 會更容易一起被 Retrieve。

成人最值得先激活哪些 Vocabulary?

如果你的 Goal 是 Everyday Speaking,可以先激活:

  • Daily Routine

  • Food

  • Work

  • Family

  • Shopping

  • Transport

  • Health

  • Travel

  • Housing

  • Social Life

如果是 Working Adult,可以優先:

  • Meetings

  • Deadlines

  • Projects

  • Clients

  • Updates

  • Problems

  • Solutions

  • Feedback

  • Presentations

不是 Vocabulary 越 Advanced 越好。

而是:

越常用的字越值得先激活。

怎麼訓練英文口說不要一直卡住?

可以做:

Timed Speaking。

選一個 Topic:

“My Weekend”

第一輪:

說30秒。

第二輪:

同一個 Topic 說60秒。

第三輪:

再說90秒。

因為 Topic 一樣,大腦第二次、第三次會更容易找到 Vocabulary。

這可以幫助建立:

Speaking Automation。

3秒反應訓練也非常有效

別人問:

“What do you usually do after work?”

給自己:

3秒。

3秒內一定要開始。

可以用:

“Well…”

“Usually…”

“Actually…”

“I think…”

先開始。

Goal 不是一開始就 Perfect。

而是訓練:

快速啟動 Language Retrieval。

為什麼重複同一個 Topic 很重要?

很多 Learner 覺得:

「這個 Topic 已經說過了,應該換新的。」

但真正的 Fluency 很大一部分來自:

Repetition。

第一次:

很慢。

第二次:

Vocabulary 更快。

第三次:

Sentence 更 Natural。

第四次:

開始 Automatic。

所以不要害怕重複。

Voice Recording 可以改善忘詞嗎?

可以。

因為 Recording 會讓你發現:

  • 哪些地方總是 Pause

  • 哪些字一直重複

  • 哪些 Idea 表達不出來

  • 哪些 Vocabulary 你知道但不會用

然後就可以針對這些 Gap 練習。

例如你發現自己每次都說:

“good”

下一步可以準備:

  • useful

  • helpful

  • enjoyable

  • convenient

  • effective

  • interesting

再重新錄一次。

怎麼建立自己的「高頻口說單字庫」?

你不需要先學20,000個單字。

可以建立一份:

Personal Speaking Vocabulary List。

記錄:

我生活中常常想說,但總是想不起來的字。

例如:

Working Adult 可以記:

  • deadline

  • postpone

  • confirm

  • schedule

  • update

  • clarify

家長可以記:

  • homework

  • behaviour

  • progress

  • participation

  • teacher

  • appointment

這比背別人隨機整理的 Word List 更有效。

為什麼 Sentence Patterns 比單字更重要?

因為 Conversation 不是:

一個單字 + 一個單字

慢慢拼出來的。

Fluent Speakers 會大量使用 Chunks。

例如:

“I’m not sure if…”

“The main reason is…”

“What I mean is…”

“As far as I know…”

“It depends on…”

“From my experience…”

如果這些 Pattern 已經 Automatic:

你只需要往裡面填 Vocabulary。

Speaking 就會快很多。

想不起單字時,哪些 Filler 可以幫助你維持 Conversation?

適量使用 Filler 可以幫自己爭取一點 Thinking Time。

例如:

“Well…”

“Actually…”

“Let me think…”

“I mean…”

“Basically…”

“The thing is…”

“For example…”

這些通常比長時間:

沉默

更自然。

但也不要每句話都:

“Um… uh…”

不然也會影響 Fluency。

英文單字量越大,口說一定越好嗎?

不一定。

一個人可能認識:

10,000個字,

但真正 Active 的只有2,000個。

另一個人可能認識:

4,000個字,

但其中3,000個都能熟練使用。

第二個人的 Conversation 反而可能更 Fluent。

所以 Speaking Vocabulary 的重點是:

Usable Vocabulary,而不是 Total Vocabulary。

為什麼成人英文口說特別需要 Vocabulary Activation?

因為成人通常不是從零開始。

很多人已經學了很多年 English。

真正的問題往往是:

Knowledge 很多,但 Activation 不足。

所以成人 Speaking Class 不應該只是:

繼續塞更多單字。

而應該讓 Learner:

  • Use Vocabulary

  • Repeat Vocabulary

  • Combine Vocabulary

  • Paraphrase

  • Respond Quickly

  • Use Words in Real Situations

Small Group 怎麼幫助解決「說英文忘詞」?

Small Group 有一個很大的優勢:

你需要:

在 Real Time 和 Different People 互動。

你不能提前準備每一句話。

因此會自然訓練:

  • Vocabulary Retrieval

  • Paraphrasing

  • Response Speed

  • Listening

  • Follow-up Questions

  • Conversation Repair

這些都是改善「說英文總是忘詞」的重要能力。

1-to-1 怎麼幫助 Vocabulary Activation?

1-to-1 可以更 Focused。

例如 Teacher 發現你總是在:

Business Meetings

裡卡住。

就可以專門建立:

Meeting Vocabulary + Sentence Patterns。

例如:

“I’d like to clarify…”

“Could we postpone…?”

“Let me give you a quick update.”

“The main issue is…”

“We need to follow up on…”

然後反覆 Role Play。

這通常比隨機背 Business Vocabulary 更有效。

在新加坡生活,可以怎麼利用環境激活單字?

Singapore 本身就是很好的 Practice Environment。

例如今天學:

appointment

當天就可以練:

“I’d like to make an appointment.”

今天學:

recommend

去 Restaurant 時可以問:

“What do you recommend?”

今天學:

available

可以問:

“Is this available?”

這就是:

Learn → Use → Repeat。

Working Adults 最容易在哪些情境忘詞?

常見包括:

  • Meetings

  • Presentations

  • Networking

  • Client Calls

  • Giving Updates

  • Explaining Problems

因為這些 Situation 壓力比較高。

所以建議準備:

High-frequency Workplace Chunks。

例如:

“Just to clarify…”

“From my perspective…”

“The main issue is…”

“Let me give you a quick update.”

“I’ll follow up with you.”

“Could we discuss this later?”

把這些練到 Automatic,可以大幅降低 Mental Load。

家長最值得激活哪些英文單字?

如果你在 Singapore 需要和 School 溝通,可以優先練:

  • progress

  • homework

  • reading

  • behaviour

  • participation

  • confidence

  • assignment

  • teacher

  • schedule

  • concern

但不要只背 Words。

要練:

“How is his progress?”

“Does she participate in class?”

“I’m a little concerned about…”

“How is his reading?”

“Does she need extra support?”

這樣才是真的會用。

為什麼 Placement Test 也可以幫助解決忘詞問題?

因為:

「我說英文總是忘詞」

不一定只是 Vocabulary Problem。

也可能是:

  • Listening 不夠快

  • Grammar Automation 不足

  • Pronunciation Anxiety

  • Response Speed 慢

  • Speaking Confidence 低

  • Vocabulary Activation

更建議學習 Chunks、Collocations 與 Real-life Sentences。

Shadowing 可以解決忘詞問題嗎?

Shadowing 可以幫助 Listening、Pronunciation 和 Rhythm,但 Vocabulary Retrieval 還需要 Free Speaking 和 Real Conversation。

每天應該背多少單字?

沒有固定數字。對 Speaking 來說,比起大量背新字,更重要的是把少量高頻 Vocabulary 真正用熟。

Small Group 可以幫助 Vocabulary Activation 嗎?

可以。Small Group 需要 Learner 在 Real Time 和 Different Speakers 互動,能自然訓練 Vocabulary Retrieval、Paraphrasing 與 Response Speed。

1-to-1 適合改善 Speaking 忘詞嗎?

適合,特別是 Learner 在 Business English、Interview、Presentation 或某些 Specific Situations 中經常卡住時,可以進行更 Focused 的訓練。

ULC Academy 有成人 Speaking 課程嗎?

有。ULC Academy Adult English Programme 提供 Small Group 和 1-to-1 選擇,並重點訓練 Speaking、Listening、Vocabulary Activation 與 Practical Communication。

Why Do I Forget English Words When Speaking? 真正的問題可能不是「你單字背得不夠多」

如果你經常覺得:

「這個字我明明認識,為什麼一說英文就想不起來?」

不要馬上下結論:

「我的 Vocabulary 太差。」

你真正缺少的可能不是:

More Words。

而是:

Faster Retrieval。

More Active Vocabulary。

More Sentence Patterns。

More Repetition。

More Real Conversation。

Better Paraphrasing。

Less Translation。

真正有效的 Vocabulary Learning Process 應該是:

Learn → Use → Retrieve → Forget a Little → Retrieve Again → Repeat → Become Automatic。

而不是:

Learn → Memorise Meaning → Never Use It。

如果一個 Word 你:

看得懂,

聽得懂,

但說不出來,

那它目前其實只是:

「你認識的單字。」

還不是:

「你真正會用的單字。」

成年人提升英文 Speaking 很重要的一件事,就是持續把:

Passive Vocabulary

轉化成:

Active Vocabulary。

在 ULC Academy Singapore,Adult Learners 可以先透過 Free English Placement Assessment 和 Free Trial Lesson 了解自己的 Current Level、Vocabulary Activation 與 Speaking Needs,再依照:

Level + Goal + Schedule + Learning Style

選擇 Small Group 或 1-to-1 English Lessons。

最終目標不是:

記住最多的英文單字。

而是:

在真正需要的時候,把適合的字更快、更自然地說出來。
