英語を話すと単語が出てこないのはなぜ?原因と改善方法

多くのAdult Learnerが、こんな経験をしています。

英文を読んでいるときは:

「この単語、知っている。」

誰かが話しているときも:

「意味は分かる。」

でも自分が話そうとすると:

突然、頭が真っ白になります。

確かに勉強したWordなのに。

つい最近見た単語なのに。

Speakingになると:

出てこない。

Conversationはこんな感じになります。

“Yesterday I went to… um…”

“I wanted to say… uh…”

“What’s the word…”

そして焦れば焦るほど、さらに思い出せません。

このとき多くのLearnerは:

「Vocabularyが足りないのかな?」

と考えます。

でも実際には、必ずしもそうではありません。

問題は:

その単語を知らないこと

ではなく、

Real Timeで素早く使えるActive Vocabularyになっていないこと

かもしれません。

この記事では、英語を話すときに単語が出てこない理由と、すでに知っているVocabularyをどうすれば:

実際に使える英語

に変えられるのかを詳しく説明します。

なぜ英単語は分かるのに、話すと出てこない?

理由は:

Recognising a Word

と:

Producing a Word

が違うSkillだからです。

例えば:

“recommend”

を見れば:

おすすめする

とすぐ分かる。

でも誰かに:

“Which restaurant should I try?”

と聞かれたとき、自分から:

“I recommend…”

と言うには別の能力が必要です。

それが:

Vocabulary Retrieval

です。

つまり:

必要な瞬間に頭の中から単語を取り出す能力

です。

Passive VocabularyとActive Vocabularyの違い

「知っているのに話せない」を理解するうえで非常に重要です。

Passive Vocabulary

見たり聞いたりしたら:

意味が分かるVocabulary。

例えば:

  • recommend

  • convenient

  • appointment

  • improve

  • experience

などです。

しかし、自分からはあまり使わない。

Active Vocabulary

意味が分かるだけでなく:

Conversationで必要なときにすぐ使えるVocabulary。

例えば:

“I recommend this place.”

“It’s very convenient.”

“I need to make an appointment.”

“I want to improve my English.”

“It was a good experience.”

Speakingで本当に必要なのは:

Active Vocabulary

です。

なぜ大人はPassive Vocabularyが多い?

多くの人が長い間:

  • Reading

  • Vocabulary Lists

  • Grammar Exercises

  • Exams

  • Multiple Choice Questions

を中心に英語を学んできたからです。

これらは主に:

Recognition

をTrainします。

しかしSpeakingでは:

Retrieval

が必要です。

そのため:

5,000語知っていても、Conversationで自然に使えるのはその一部

ということが起こります。

1. 「単語」だけ覚えて「使い方」を覚えていない

多くの人は:

English Word → 日本語の意味

という方法で覚えます。

例えば:

“recommend = おすすめする”

それで終わり。

でもReal Speakingでは:

おすすめする↓recommend↓Sentence Structureを考える↓Grammarを選ぶ↓発音する

というProcessが必要です。

当然、時間がかかります。

より良い方法:Chunksで覚える

単に:

recommend

だけ覚えるのではなく:

“I recommend…”

“I’d recommend…”

“What do you recommend?”

“Would you recommend it?”

を一緒に覚えます。

そうすれば「おすすめする」と言いたいとき:

Sentenceを毎回ゼロから作る必要がありません。

そのまま:

Ready-made Language Chunk

を使えます。

2. 学んだ単語を実際に使う回数が少ない

Language Memoryは:

Repetition + Retrieval

によって強くなります。

例えばあるWordを:

数回見ただけで、

一度も自分で話したことがない。

この場合、そのWordはPassive Memoryに残りやすいです。

Active Vocabularyにするには:

  • 実際に話す

  • 書く

  • Different Contextで使う

  • 何度も思い出す

必要があります。

何回使えばActive Vocabularyになる?

Exact Numberはありません。

でも基本は:

一度理解しただけでは、自由に使えるようにはならない。

です。

例えば:

“convenient”

を覚えたら:

“It’s convenient.”

だけで終わらせず:

“This location is very convenient.”

“It’s convenient for me.”

“Public transport in Singapore is very convenient.”

“The timing is convenient.”

“Would this time be convenient for you?”

などDifferent Sentencesで使います。

Wordが:

Memory → Usage

に変わりやすくなります。

3. 緊張するとVocabulary Retrievalが遅くなる

普段は分かるWordでも:

  • Native Speaker

  • Boss

  • Client

  • Teacher

  • Group Discussion

の場面では突然出なくなることがあります。

なぜならSpeakingでは同時に:

  • Listening

  • Grammar

  • Pronunciation

  • Vocabulary

  • Eye Contact

  • Response

  • Social Pressure

を処理しているからです。

Mental Loadが高くなると:

Word Retrieval

が遅くなります。

なぜ緊張するとさらに言葉が出ない?

頭の中でずっと:

「Grammar合ってる?」

「発音大丈夫?」

「Tense間違ってない?」

とSelf-monitoringしているからです。

これがWorking Memoryを使います。

その結果:

Vocabularyを取り出しにくくなります。

どう改善する?

SpeakingのGoalを:

Perfect English

から:

Keep the Conversation Moving

に変えてみましょう。

4. 「一番正確な単語」を探しすぎる

Learnerが止まる理由は:

何も言えないから

ではないことがあります。

むしろ:

Best Wordを探しすぎている

ことがあります。

例えば:

「このScheduleは私にとって便利です。」

と言いたい。

“convenient”

が出てこない。

でも:

“It works well for me.”

と言えば十分です。

それでも“convenient”を思い出すまで待っていると:

Conversationが止まります。

Fluent SpeakerはParaphraseする

Fluencyとは:

すべての単語を常に覚えていること

ではありません。

本当のFluencyは:

Wordを忘れても別の方法で説明できること

です。

例えば:

“appointment”

が出てこなければ:

“I need to book a time to see the doctor.”

“umbrella”

が出てこなければ:

“The thing you use when it rains.”

と言えます。

これが:

Paraphrasing

です。

非常に大切なSpeaking Skillです。

5. 日本語のSentenceを完成させてから英語に翻訳している

Speaking Processが:

完成した日本語Sentence↓英語Wordを探す↓Grammar確認↓Word Order変更↓Speak

となっていると、簡単に止まります。

一つでもWordが思い出せないと:

Sentence全体が止まる

からです。

どう改善する?

Japanese Sentence → Exact Translation

ではなく:

Idea → Simple English

をPracticeします。

例えば:

「このPlanは今の状況ではかなり現実的だと思います。」

を完璧に翻訳する必要はありません。

“I think this plan is quite practical.”

でもいいです。

さらにSimpleに:

“I think this plan can work.”

でもCommunicationできます。

6. ContextなしでWordを覚えている

単語を単独で覚えると、実際のSpeakingで使いにくくなります。

例えば:

“issue = 問題”

だけ覚える。

でもConversationではどう使うか分からない。

それより:

“There’s an issue with my booking.”

“The main issue is the cost.”

“We need to solve this issue.”

のようにContextで学んだ方がRecallしやすくなります。

なぜContextが重要?

脳はWordだけではなく:

  • Situation

  • Sentence

  • Collocation

  • Meaning

  • Emotion

も一緒に記憶します。

Cueが多いほどSpeakingでRecallしやすくなります。

7. Collocationを学んでいない

英語にはNaturalなWord Combinationがあります。

例えば:

make a decision

take a break

book an appointment

raise a question

give feedback

もし:

decision

break

appointment

question

feedback

だけ覚えていたら、Speaking中に:

どのVerbを使う?

と考える必要があります。

だから学習単位は:

Single Word

だけでなく:

Collocation

がおすすめです。

8. 日本語の意味に頼りすぎる

例えば:

“improve”

を見るたび:

改善する

と考える。

するとSpeakingでも:

日本語 → English

が必要になります。

それよりEnglish Associationを作ります。

例えば:

“improve my English”

“improve my speaking”

“improve communication”

“improve quickly”

などです。

徐々に:

English → English Connection

が強くなります。

9. 「素早く単語を取り出す練習」をしていない

多くのVocabulary Exerciseは:

Wordを見て、意味を答える。

でもSpeakingでは:

Hintなしで自分からWordを探す

必要があります。

これは別のSkillです。

だからSpeaking Vocabularyには:

Active Recall

が必要です。

Active Recallとは?

例えば答えを見ないで:

“How do I say ‘予約’?”

と自分に聞く。

そして:

“appointment.”

と答える。

次に:

“How do I use it?”

“I’d like to make an appointment.”

と言います。

単語帳を見ながら読むより、Speakingに近いPracticeです。

10. 速く話そうとしすぎる

一部のLearnerは:

Fluent = Fast

だと思っています。

そのため急いで話そうとします。

でも速すぎると脳がVocabularyをRetrieveする時間がありません。

本当のFluencyはSpeedだけではありません。

重要なのは:

  • Fewer Long Pauses

  • Natural Rhythm

  • Clear Ideas

  • Smooth Connections

です。

少しSlowでも自然に話せれば十分Fluentです。

英語で単語が出てこないとき、どうすればいい?

止まらないことが大切です。

次の方法を使えます。

方法1:簡単なWordに言い換える

“purchase”

が出てこなければ:

“buy”

でOKです。

方法2:説明する

“receipt”

が出てこなければ:

“The paper they give you after you pay.”

と説明できます。

方法3:反対表現を使う

“expensive”

が出てこなければ:

“not cheap.”

と言えます。

方法4:用途を説明する

“charger”

が出てこなければ:

“the thing I use to charge my phone.”

と説明できます。

方法5:Wordを忘れたことを言う

例えば:

“I forgot the word, but…”

“It’s something that…”

“I can’t remember the exact word.”

と言って続けます。

Real Conversationでは:

すべてのWordをPerfectに覚えている必要はありません。

Passive VocabularyをActive Vocabularyに変える方法

非常にSimpleな方法は:

1 Word → 5 Sentences

です。

例えば:

“available”

を学んだら:

available = 空いている / 利用可能

だけ覚えるのではなく:

“Are you available tomorrow?”

“I’m available after 3 pm.”

“This class is available on weekends.”

“Is this seat available?”

“The teacher is not available today.”

を言ってみます。

Wordが:

Memory → Usage

へ進みます。

Randomな単語帳よりTopic別Vocabulary

例えば:

hospital

discount

interview

airport

project

のように無関係な単語を一度に覚えるより:

Topicを決めます。

例えば:

Restaurant English

  • menu

  • order

  • recommend

  • bill

  • spicy

  • reservation

  • table

  • available

そしてこれらを使ってConversationします。

関連VocabularyをまとめてRecallしやすくなります。

Adult Learnerが最初にActiveにしたいVocabulary

Everyday SpeakingがGoalなら:

  • Daily Routine

  • Food

  • Work

  • Family

  • Shopping

  • Transport

  • Health

  • Travel

  • Housing

  • Social Life

から始めると良いです。

Working Adultなら:

  • Meetings

  • Deadlines

  • Projects

  • Clients

  • Updates

  • Problems

  • Solutions

  • Feedback

  • Presentations

を優先できます。

Speakingでは:

Advanced Vocabulary

より:

Frequently Used Vocabulary

が先です。

英語でいつも詰まるならTimed Speaking

一つTopicを選びます。

例えば:

“My Weekend”

1回目:

30秒。

2回目:

同じTopicで60秒。

3回目:

90秒。

Topicが同じなので、2回目、3回目はVocabularyが早く出やすくなります。

これは:

Speaking Automation

を作るのにUsefulです。

3-second Response Practiceも効果的

誰かに:

“What do you usually do after work?”

と聞かれたら:

3秒以内

に話し始めます。

例えば:

“Well…”

“Usually…”

“Actually…”

“I think…”

から始めてもOKです。

GoalはPerfect Answerではありません。

Goalは:

Language Retrievalを素早くStartすること。

なぜ同じTopicをRepeatするの?

多くのLearnerは:

「もう話したTopicだから、新しいTopicにしよう。」

と考えます。

でもFluencyは:

Repetition

によって強くなります。

1回目:

Slow。

2回目:

Vocabularyが早い。

3回目:

SentenceがNatural。

4回目:

Automatic。

だからRepeatは非常に重要です。

Voice Recordingも効果ある?

はい。

Recordingすると:

  • どこでPauseするか

  • どのWordをRepeatしすぎるか

  • どのIdeaが言えないか

  • どのVocabularyを知っているのに使えないか

が分かります。

例えば毎回:

“good”

ばかり言っているなら:

  • useful

  • helpful

  • enjoyable

  • convenient

  • effective

  • interesting

を準備して、もう一度Recordingします。

自分だけのSpeaking Vocabulary Listを作る

最初から20,000Words覚える必要はありません。

おすすめは:

Personal Speaking Vocabulary List

です。

基準は:

「自分の生活でよく言いたいのに、毎回出てこないWord」

です。

Working Adultなら:

  • deadline

  • postpone

  • confirm

  • schedule

  • update

  • clarify

Parentなら:

  • homework

  • behaviour

  • progress

  • participation

  • teacher

  • appointment

などです。

Random Word ListよりPracticalです。

なぜSentence PatternsがWordより重要?

Conversationは:

Word + Word + Word

を毎回ゼロから組み立てるものではありません。

Fluent SpeakerはたくさんのChunksを使います。

例えば:

“I’m not sure if…”

“The main reason is…”

“What I mean is…”

“As far as I know…”

“It depends on…”

“From my experience…”

こうしたPatternがAutomaticなら:

必要なVocabularyだけ中に入れればよくなります。

Speakingが速くなります。

単語が出てこないときに使えるFiller

Thinking Timeが必要なら:

“Well…”

“Actually…”

“Let me think…”

“I mean…”

“Basically…”

“The thing is…”

“For example…”

などが使えます。

長いSilenceより自然です。

ただし毎回:

“Um… uh…”

ばかりになるとFluencyに影響するので、使いすぎには注意します。

Vocabularyが多い人ほどSpeakingが上手?

必ずしもそうではありません。

Learner A:

10,000Words知っている。

でもActiveは2,000。

Learner B:

4,000Words知っている。

そのうち3,000を自由に使える。

この場合:

Learner Bの方がConversationではFluentかもしれません。

Speaking Vocabularyで重要なのは:

Total Vocabulary

ではなく:

Usable Vocabulary

です。

大人のSpeakingでVocabulary Activationが重要な理由

Adult Learnerは多くの場合:

ゼロから英語を始めるわけではありません。

すでに多くのEnglish Knowledgeがあります。

Problemは:

KnowledgeはあるけどActivationが足りないこと。

だからAdult Speaking Classは:

New Vocabularyを増やすだけ

では十分ではありません。

Learnerが:

  • Use Vocabulary

  • Repeat Vocabulary

  • Combine Vocabulary

  • Paraphrase

  • Respond Quickly

  • Use Words in Real Situations

する必要があります。

Small Groupは「単語が出てこない」を改善できる?

はい。

Small Groupの大きなAdvantagesは:

Different PeopleとReal Timeで話さないといけないこと

です。

全部のSentenceを事前準備できません。

そのため自然に:

  • Vocabulary Retrieval

  • Paraphrasing

  • Response Speed

  • Listening

  • Follow-up Questions

  • Conversation Repair

をPracticeできます。

これらはSpeaking中に言葉が出ないProblemを改善する大切なSkillです。

1-to-1はVocabulary Activationにどう役立つ?

1-to-1ではもっとFocusedなPracticeができます。

例えば:

Business Meetingでいつも言葉が出ない。

この場合:

Meeting Vocabulary + Sentence Patterns

を集中的にPracticeできます。

例えば:

“I’d like to clarify…”

“Could we postpone…?”

“Let me give you a quick update.”

“The main issue is…”

“We need to follow up on…”

などです。

そして何度もRole Playします。

Random Business Vocabularyを覚えるよりPracticalです。

Singaporeの生活環境を利用してVocabularyをActiveにする

SingaporeではClassroomの外でもEnglishを使えます。

例えば今日:

appointment

を学んだら:

“I’d like to make an appointment.”

とReal Lifeで使います。

今日:

recommend

を学んだらRestaurantで:

“What do you recommend?”

と聞きます。

今日:

available

を学んだら:

“Is this available?”

と使います。

これが:

Learn → Use → Repeat

です。

Working Adultsはどんな場面で単語が出にくい?

代表的なのは:

  • Meetings

  • Presentations

  • Networking

  • Client Calls

  • Giving Updates

  • Explaining Problems

です。

Pressureが高いSituationだからです。

だから:

High-frequency Workplace Chunks

を先に準備するとUsefulです。

例えば:

“Just to clarify…”

“From my perspective…”

“The main issue is…”

“Let me give you a quick update.”

“I’ll follow up with you.”

“Could we discuss this later?”

こうしたExpressionをAutomaticにするとMental Loadが減ります。

Parentが先にActiveにしたいVocabulary

SingaporeでSchoolとCommunicationするなら:

  • progress

  • homework

  • reading

  • behaviour

  • participation

  • confidence

  • assignment

  • teacher

  • schedule

  • concern

などがUsefulです。

ただしWordだけ覚えるのではなく:

“How is his progress?”

“Does she participate in class?”

“I’m a little concerned about…”

“How is his reading?”

“Does she need extra support?”

のように使います。

Placement Testが「単語が出ない」ProblemにもUsefulな理由

「SpeakingするとWordが出てこない。」

というProblemが必ずしもVocabularyだけとは限りません。

例えば:

  • ListeningがSlow

  • Grammar AutomationがWeak

  • Pronunciation Anxiety

  • Response SpeedがSlow

  • Speaking ConfidenceがLow

  • Vocabulary Activation不足

など、別の原因もあります。

だから:

「もっと単語を覚えよう。」

と決める前に、Current Levelと実際のSpeaking Performanceを確認する方がBetterです。

よくある質問 FAQ

英単語は知っているのに、なぜSpeakingになると出てこない?

RecognitionとActive RetrievalはDifferent Skillsだからです。知っているVocabularyがまだReal Timeで使えるActive Vocabularyになっていない可能性があります。

Vocabulary

Word

Different SpeakersとReal TimeでCommunicationするため、Vocabulary Retrieval、Paraphrasing、Response SpeedをNaturalにPracticeできます。

1-to-1もUseful?

はい。Business English、Interview、PresentationなどSpecific Situationで言葉が出にくいLearnerにはFocused Practiceができます。

ULC AcademyにはAdult Speaking Courseがある?

はい。ULC Academy Adult English ProgrammeではSmall Groupと1-to-1 Optionsがあり、Speaking、Listening、Vocabulary Activation、Practical Communicationを重視しています。

Why Do I Forget English Words When Speaking? 問題は「単語を覚えていないこと」ではないかもしれない

もしよく:

「この単語絶対知っているのに、話すと出てこない。」

と感じるなら:

「Vocabularyが足りない。」

とすぐ結論を出す必要はありません。

本当に必要なのは:

More Words

ではなく:

Faster Retrieval。

More Active Vocabulary。

More Sentence Patterns。

More Repetition。

More Real Conversation。

Better Paraphrasing。

Less Translation。

かもしれません。

効果的なVocabulary Learning Processは:

Learn → Use → Retrieve → Forget a Little → Retrieve Again → Repeat → Become Automatic

です。

一方で:

Learn → Memorise Meaning → Never Use It

だけではSpeakingで出てくるようになりません。

もしWordを:

読めば分かる。

聞けば分かる。

でも自分から言えない。

なら、そのWordはまだ:

「知っている単語」

であって:

「使える単語」

ではないかもしれません。

Adult LearnerのSpeaking Improvementで重要なのは:

Passive Vocabulary

を少しずつ:

Active Vocabulary

に変えることです。

ULC Academy Singaporeでは、Adult Learnerがまず Free English Placement Assessment と Free Trial Lesson を通してCurrent Level、Vocabulary Activation、Speaking Needsを確認し、その後:

Level + Goal + Schedule + Learning Style

に合わせてSmall Groupまたは1-to-1 English Lessonsを選ぶことができます。

最終Goalは:

最も多くの英単語を覚えること

ではありません。

本当に大切なのは:

必要な瞬間に、使いたいWordをより速く、より自然に口から出せるようになること

です。
